After returning to the United States in 1867, Lafcadio began working as a journalist in Cincinnati and New Orleans. In Cincinnati, he wrote for the Daily Commercial and the Commercial Tribune, and in New Orleans, he wrote for the Picayune and the Times-Democrat. His work as a journalist allowed him to travel throughout the United States, and he eventually settled in New Orleans in 1870.
