Garret FitzGerald was first elected Taoiseach, or prime minister, of the Republic of Ireland in 1981. He led the Fine Gael party and served as Taoiseach for two terms, from 1981 to 1982 and again from 1982 to 1987. During his time in office, he implemented economic policies that helped to stabilize the Irish economy and was a key figure in the Northern Ireland peace process.
