Born on February 5, Robert Hofstadter was an American physicist who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1961 with Rudolf Mössbauer for their studies of the atomic nucleus and elementary particles, carried out with the use of high-energy electron accelerators. He was also noted for being the first to propose the existence of electron-positron pair production in the collision of high-energy gamma rays with atomic nuclei.
