Hirschfeld was a German sexologist, psychologist, and writer. He was also a homosexual and a Jew. Hirschfeld was a vocal opponent of the Nazi Party and its policies. He was also a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. Hirschfeld was arrested by the Nazis in 1933 and was forced to flee Germany. He died in exile in France in 1935.
