Pope Lucius III was exiled from Rome during his papacy. This was because of his opposition to the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Lucius III was a strong advocate of papal supremacy, and he opposed Frederick's attempts to expand his power. In 1184, Frederick invaded Rome and captured Lucius III. Lucius III was then exiled to Germany, where he remained until his death in 1185.
