King Mahendra reigned for 17 years, from 1955 to 1972. He was the second king of Nepal, after his father, King Tribhuvan. King Mahendra was a controversial figure, as he was seen as autocratic and authoritarian by some. He was also responsible for the 1962 Nepali Royal Coup d'état, which abolished the constitution and established a new system of government.
