The Constitution of Finland was reformed in 1999-2000, replacing the 1919 constitution which had been amended many times. The new constitution strengthened the power of the Prime Minister and cabinet at the expense of the President. It also provided for a more independent judiciary and made it easier for citizens to challenge laws in court.
