Rafael Carrera was a Guatemalan military leader and politician who served as president of Guatemala from 1844 to 1848 and from 1851 to 1865. He was known for his authoritarian rule and his support of the Catholic Church. In 1854, Carrera was declared president for life by the Guatemalan Congress.
