El Cid was born in Vivar, a small village in the province of Burgos, Spain. His real name was Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, but he is better known by his nickname, El Cid, which means "the Lord" in Arabic. He was a legendary figure who was a hero of the Reconquista, the Christian reconquest of Spain from the Moors. He was also a skilled military commander and a great warrior.
