Saint Alban is believed to have been a British citizen who was executed for sheltering a Roman soldier in the 3rd or 4th century. He is considered the first Christian martyr in Britain and is the patron saint of London. The church of St Albans Abbey was built in his honour and is the oldest Christian church in Britain.
