Saint Alban was martyred in the Roman city of Verulamium, which is now the city of St Albans in Hertfordshire, England. He was born in the early 4th century AD and was a Roman soldier who was converted to Christianity. After being arrested for refusing to worship the Roman gods, he was beheaded. His death was followed by a period of persecution of Christians in Britain.
