Beheading marked the martyrdom of Saint Alban. He was beheaded in the Roman province of Britannia during the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian (c. 244–313 AD). Alban was a Christian convert and a Roman soldier. After hiding a Christian priest from the authorities, Alban was arrested and executed for refusing to renounce his faith.
