Ismail Kadare was born in 1936 in Gjirokastra, Albania. He is a novelist, poet, and essayist. His works have been translated into more than 40 languages and he has won numerous awards, including the Man Booker International Prize in 2005. Kadare's novels often explore themes of history, memory, and identity.
