McMaster served as the Deputy to the Commander for Planning of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. This was a NATO-led multinational force established in 2001 as part of the War in Afghanistan. The ISAF was responsible for providing security and stability in Afghanistan, and for supporting the Afghan government and security forces. McMaster served in this role from 2004 to 2007.
