Giovanni Maria Ciocchi del Monte, better known as Pope Julius III, was born in 1487 in Rome. He rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church, becoming a cardinal in 1536. Upon the death of Pope Paul III in 1549, Ciocchi del Monte was elected as his successor and took the papal name Julius III.
