"Uncle Nicky" was the affectionate nickname given to Nicholas Winton, the British humanitarian who organized the rescue of 669 mostly Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia in 1939. Winton modestly downplayed his role in the operation, which became known as the "Kindertransport," and it was not until the late 1980s that his heroic actions were widely recognized and celebrated.
