The Anarchy was a civil war in England from 1135 to 1154. It began after the death of King Henry I, who had no male heir. Henry's daughter, Matilda, was his designated successor, but many of his barons opposed her claim to the throne. They supported Stephen, Henry's nephew, who was crowned king. Matilda refused to accept Stephen's rule and led an army against him.
