Hafizullah Amin was a prominent Afghan communist and the second president of Afghanistan. He was a protégé of Nur Muhammad Taraki, and he played a key role in the Saur Revolution, which overthrew the monarchy and established the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Amin became prime minister in 1978, and he succeeded Taraki as president in 1979.
