Thomas Becket was born in London, England. Born into a wealthy merchant family, he received an excellent education, studying in London and Paris. He later became an influential figure in the English church, eventually serving as Archbishop of Canterbury. Becket is most famously known for his conflict with King Henry II over the rights and privileges of the church, which ultimately led to his martyrdom in 1170.
