Elijah Lovejoy was an abolitionist from Alton, Illinois who was killed by a pro-slavery mob. Like Garrison, Lovejoy was a pacifist who believed that slavery could be abolished through moral suasion. He published an abolitionist newspaper called the Alton Observer, and he was frequently harassed by pro-slavery mobs. In 1837, a mob destroyed his printing press, and Lovejoy was killed when he tried to defend it.
