Marguerite Yourcenar was born in 1903. A French novelist, essayist, and translator, Yourcenar is best known for her historical novels and her exploration of gender and sexuality. She was the first woman elected to the Académie française in 1980 and won numerous awards, including the Prix Femina in 1939 and the French-American Foundation Translation Prize in 1968.
