Houari Boumediene succeeded Ahmed Ben Bella as the Algerian President. Boumediene was a military officer who had been involved in the Algerian Revolution. He became president in 1965 and ruled until his death in 1978. During his presidency, Boumediene oversaw a period of rapid economic and social development in Algeria.
