Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi returned to power after the 1953 coup in Iran. The coup was organized by the United States and Britain to overthrow the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh. The coup was successful and Pahlavi was restored to power. He ruled Iran as an autocrat until the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
