Originally Ruthenian, Josaphat was a Uniate metropolitan bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. He is venerated as a martyr and saint by both Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Christians. After refusing to convert to Orthodoxy, he was killed on the orders of Cossack hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky during the Khmelnytsky Uprising.
