Dean Whitehead retired from professional football in 2018, after a 17-year career that saw him play for several clubs in England and Scotland. He started his career with Sunderland, where he made over 100 appearances, before moving to Middlesbrough in 2007. He also had spells with Stoke City, Norwich City and Bolton Wanderers, before retiring at the age of 34.
