Thích Nhất Hạnh was in exile from South Vietnam for 39 years. He was a Buddhist monk and peace activist who was exiled from South Vietnam in 1966 for his opposition to the Vietnam War. He spent most of his exile in France, where he founded the Plum Village monastery. He returned to Vietnam in 2005 and continued to work for peace and reconciliation.
