Lâm Văn Túc, born on June 19, 1897, in the village of Hòa Phú in the former French protectorate of Annam (now central Vietnam), later became renowned as Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk who committed self-immolation on June 11, 1963, in Saigon to protest the South Vietnamese government's persecution of Buddhists.
