Todd Matshikiza was a South African journalist, novelist and composer. He is best known for his musical, King Kong, which was based on the life of heavyweight boxing champion, Primo Carnera. The musical premiered in London in 1956 and was a critical and commercial success. Matshikiza also wrote a number of novels, including The Road to Mecca (1964) and A Time to Die (1981). He died in 1990.
