Ieyasu died on June 1, 1616, at the age of 75. He was the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. Ieyasu was born in 1543 in Okazaki, Mikawa Province (now Aichi Prefecture). He was the son of Matsudaira Hirotada, a daimyō (feudal lord) of Mikawa Province. Ieyasu was a skilled warrior and politician, and he quickly rose to power.
