Toma T. Socolescu died in Bucharest, Romania. He was a Romanian physician, surgeon and scientist. He is best known for his work in bacteriology and his development of the first vaccine against diphtheria. Socolescu was born in Bucharest in 1873. He studied medicine at the University of Bucharest and then went on to study in Germany and Austria. In 1898, he returned to Bucharest and began working as a surgeon.
