Toussaint Louverture was enslaved on the French colony of Saint-Domingue. He was born in Africa and was brought to the island as a child. He worked on a sugar plantation and eventually became a leader of the slave rebellion that began in 1791. Louverture was a brilliant military strategist and led the rebels to victory. He was eventually captured by the French and died in prison in 1803.
