Yıldırım Akbulut succeeded Turgut Özal as Prime Minister of Turkey in 1989. Özal, who had led the country since 1983, died in office due to a heart attack. Akbulut, a member of Özal's Motherland Party, was elected by the Grand National Assembly to complete Özal's term. He served as Prime Minister until 1991, when he was replaced by Mesut Yılmaz.
