Captain Cook died in 1779, during his third voyage to the Pacific. He met his end in a skirmish with Hawaiians on the island Hawaii, which the Europeans called the "Sandwich Islands." The Hawaiians revered Cook as the reincarnation of their god Lono and initially greeted his arrival with great fanfare.
