Answer
The name "Slew" is an informal way to say "slewer," a person who throws or shoots a missile. It is believed that John S. McCain Sr. acquired the nickname in his youth, when he was known for his skill with a slingshot. He later served as a naval aviator and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Santa Cruz in 1942.
