Parsons, a physicist and US Navy officer, armed the bomb in flight. This procedure was unique to the Little Boy bomb, as the other two bombs dropped by the US in World War II were armed prior to takeoff. Parsons had to climb onto the bomb's tail section while the plane was still in flight and manually arm the bomb.
