Edward IV, the eldest son of Richard of York, ascended to the throne first. After the Battle of Wakefield in 1460, where his father was killed, Edward inherited the Yorkist claim to the English throne. He successfully led the Yorkist forces to victory in the Battle of Towton in 1461, deposing the Lancastrian king Henry VI and becoming King Edward IV of England.
