Shirley Ann Jackson is the second African-American woman in the US to earn a doctorate in physics. She received her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968, and went on to become a professor at the University of Chicago and later the president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She has also served on several government advisory boards, including the President's Science Advisory Committee and the National Science Foundation.
