Edwin McMillan is credited for creating the first transuranium element. This is an element that is heavier than uranium, and was the first element to be discovered that was not naturally occurring on Earth. McMillan and his colleague Philip Abelson were able to create the element neptunium by bombarding uranium with deuterons, which are heavy hydrogen atoms.
