Thomas Richard Harkin was born in Cumming, Iowa on November 19, 1939. He was raised in a Catholic family and attended the University of Iowa, where he studied law. Harkin was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1969 and served for six years. In 1975, he was elected to the United States Senate, where he served for 30 years.
