The Royal Society of Literature is a British learned society and the oldest literary society in the world, founded in 1820. It is responsible for awarding the prestigious Man Booker Prize for Fiction, as well as the W.H. Smith Literary Award and the David Cohen Prize. Derek Walcott, a Nobel Prize-winning poet, was awarded the Society's prestigious Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1988.
