Derek Walcott was a Saint Lucian poet, playwright, and novelist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992. He was born in Castries, Saint Lucia, in 1930 and died in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, in 2017. Walcott's work is often characterized by its use of Caribbean and African mythology and folklore, as well as its exploration of themes of colonialism and postcolonialism.
