At the beginning of the Western Schism, Louis IX acknowledged Urban VI as the legitimate pope. Urban VI was elected by the cardinals, but the French cardinals who had not been present at the election refused to accept him and instead elected Clement VII. Clement VII was supported by the Holy Roman Emperor, and thus a schism developed in the Catholic Church.
