Barrow returned to the Gambia in 2006, after spending several years in exile following the 1994 military coup. He had been a vocal critic of the Yahya Jammeh regime and was forced to flee the country for his safety. Upon his return, Barrow became involved in politics and eventually ran for president in 2016. He won the election and became the third president of the Gambia.
