Al-Musta'li was born on 15/16 September 1074. He was the eleventh Fatimid caliph, ruling from 1094 to 1101. His reign was marked by political instability and economic decline. Al-Musta'li was a patron of the arts and sciences, and he founded the famous al-Azhar University in Cairo.
