He was the younger brother of Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite. George VI was married to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who became Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother after his death. Princess Alice was the sister of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, and therefore George VI's sister-in-law.
