Prince Claus was born in Germany. He was a member of the House of Amsberg, a noble family from Lower Saxony. Claus studied law and economics at the University of Hamburg before becoming a diplomat. In 1966, he married Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, who later became Queen Beatrix. Claus became a naturalized Dutch citizen and was granted the title of Prince of the Netherlands.
