Berengar I was an Italian nobleman from the March of Friuli. In 888, he was elected King of Italy by the Lombard nobles. He was the first of several foreign rulers to be elected king of Italy in the late ninth and early tenth centuries. Berengar's reign was marked by conflict with the Holy Roman Emperors.
