Igor succeeded Oleg as the ruler of the Kievan Rus'. Oleg, a Varangian prince, had conquered Kiev and established the Kievan Rus' in 882. After Oleg's death in 912, Igor, who was married to Oleg's daughter, became the ruler. Igor continued Oleg's expansionist policies, leading military campaigns against the Byzantine Empire and other neighboring states.
