Oleg was the successor of Rurik, the founder of the Kievan Rus' state. Rurik was a Varangian chieftain who was invited to rule over the Slavic tribes in the region in 862 AD. He established his capital in Novgorod and began to expand his territory. Rurik died in 879 AD, and Oleg became his successor.
