Tom Steyer served on the board of trustees of Stanford University from 2001 to 2006. He was appointed to the board by former president of the university Gerhard Casper and was re-appointed by then president John Hennessy. Steyer was a major donor to Stanford during his time on the board, and he helped to establish the Tom Steyer Center for Social Innovation at the university.
